The Black Death

The Black Death greatly influenced the development of the Renaissance. Many people were affected by the Black Death. 80% of the people in the Renaissance died.

It lasted for one hundred years. The Black Death started at 1350 and ended 1450.

The Rich

The social classes were the government, citizens, and the poor. The governement had rich citizens. Their houses were small palaces or villas. They would go to banquets and eat thing like soup, wine, and meat. Soup was expensive.

Elizabeth born at Greenwich Palace, she was named after Elizabeth of Yonk and Elizabeth Howard. Second child of Henry VIII of England born in Wedlock. Her mother was Henrys

Clothing was important with nobles and wealthy people during the Renaissance. Only the royal families wore clothes with good material and bright colors. Men wore gold and silver brocades.

-During the renaissance a poor farmer would have a one room house.

-They had neither light or heat , so they would have to live in the dark and freeze during the very cold nights.

-But the wealthier merchants started to live in bigger and larger houses.

-They never had running water either so it must have been pretty stinky.

-The wealthier merchants for example would start to live in houses such as this picture on the left.

How People Lived During the Renaissance

There was an increasing failure at the Roman Catholic Church. The spirit of Renaissance took in many forms but was mostly in Humanism. Humanism started in Italy, then spread to parts of Europe. It spread rapidly in the Renaissance especially while printing was invented.

Food

Houses in the Renaissance

Soup was very rich and very expensive. In roasts, the most common type of food they had was meat. Then, in the 15th Century, they introduced salads to the roasts. Pasta was very important and they also ate French cheeses and sweet pastries.

-Houses were cold and dark.

-There was no running water or bathrooms

-Poor homes were small one room huts and farmers mostly lived in them

-Rich homes were large and had many rooms

Marriage

In the Renaissance, divorce was not permitted in marriage. Women that were only fourteen often married men that were in their thirties. They believed that marriage should not be kept secret but should be open. Women were housewives, servants. They could command high pay.
