What EVIDENCE does the author use to support her claims?

What is the author's MAIN POINT? Or, what is the author trying to talk about? This can be either a fact or an opinion.

Today, we are going to read "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior," by Amy Chua. SHe is a professor of law at Yale, and a mother of two. While we read, we are going to trace her argument.

What are the more specific claims the author is making? This is different than the main point in that individual claims would tend to support the position statement.

Tracing an argument is a During reading strategy. By tracing, we can take a closer look at how Ms. Chua has laid out individual elements of the argument. Knowing these can help us to understand more deeply.

Read the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson. What do you think about Emerson's defenition of Success? Name at least two things that you agree with, and why. Is there anything that you think Emerson left out of his defenition?
