Causes

  • abdominal pain
  • cramps
  • changes in bowel habits after eating a meal
  • stool appears less or more solid (watery or hard)
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • abdominal bloating
  • to be considered IBS these symptoms must occur at least 3 times a month
  • effects GI tract which is a series of organs joined from the mouth to the anus
  • condition mostly effects the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, gallbladder, and colon

Treatment

Description

  • various physical exams and look into medical history of patient
  • a diagnosis requires symptoms to start at least 6 months prior and occurs at least 3 times a month for the past 3 months
  • PHYSICAL TESTS:
  • stool test: analysis of a sample of stool
  • lower GI series: x-ray used to look at large intestine
  • colonoscopy: small camera on a tube sends a video image of the intestinal lining to a computer screen
