With his experiment, Chadwick proved that neutrons are in the nuclear. He also discovered that it is not a bound out of protons and electrons but a neutral particle with about the same weight like a proton.

Events in the World

1904 – Sherlock Holmes is first created. Most popular detective in literature history. Inspires many to explore, think and observe.

1912 – Captain Scott’s expedition and death at the South Pole.

1915 – World War 1

1929 – 1932 – The Great Depression

People were constantly exploring the world and everyone wanted to know more. Scientific and technological were rapidly moving.

Highlights of the Time Period

Summary

  • The discovery of the neutron and its properties transformed subatomic physics.
  • It enabled scientists to produce new elements, and led to the discovery of nuclear fission and its consequences for both war and peace.
  • Chadwick's remarkable confinement under adverse conditions during World War I could have ended his career in physics. Rutherford, however, was a powerful enough mentor to have resurrected Chadwick from that difficult experience.
  • Chadwick's success can be seen in light of his training under Rutherford, demonstrating a relationship similar to that of Ludwig von Helmholtz and his students such as Heinrich Hertz and Albert Michelson.
  • While Chadwick's results were certainly his own, his story shows that a hefty element of scientific discovery lies in teamwork, both among co-workers and with senior investigators who laid the foundation for those who followed them.

Discovery of the Neutron

James Chadwick

A paraffin wax target is put between the two chambers. Neutrons may hit Atoms within the Wax which release protons, which are then detected in the ionization chamber

Discovery of the Neutron

Hydrogen Atom

Helium Atom

Before they discovered the neutrons, they only knew about the protons. But Rutherford found out that Helium has 4 times the mass of Hydrogen but only 2 Protons. He reasoned that there must be something else in the nucleus. He called that Neutron. He also thought that neutrons are a bound out of protons and electrons.

Chadwick’s discovery

Chadwick’s apparatus consisted of the neutron chamber, in which neutrons are produced, and the ionization chamber which detects protons.

The air is removed from the neutron chamber through the thin chimney to produce a vacuum.
