What we could do better

to protect the biodiversity in the Amazon

  • Restrict the trade of certain rainforest tree species
  • Incorporate the techniques of indigenous Amazonians into agricultural projects in the rainforest to increase the productivity of degraded forest lands and promote sustainable use of forest resources
  • ensuring sufficient enforcement agencies and funding exist for the maintenance of protected areas
  • encouraging the involvement of locals -- the fate of protected areas rests largely in the hands of local people and only by improving their living condition can we expect conservation efforts to be successful.
  • have more laws to protect certain species of wildlife

Threats to biodiversity

in the Amazon

What we are doing to protect it

Some of the many threats that the biodiversity in the Amazon face are:

  • deforestation
  • human developments due to trade
  • habitat destruction
  • invasive species
  • climate change
  • wildfires
  • weather systems like 'La Nina'

Majority of nations that the Amazon spands over have introduced different laws to protect the biodiversity in the Amazon. Some Examples of this are:

  • Brazil-Those responsible for destruction of rainforest lands will be required to complete full reforestation, except for small farmers, who will only have to reforest 20 percent of the land.

  • Bolivia- landowners that illegally cleared forest prior to 2011 can reduce their fines if they either develop productive agriculture on that land, or reforest it.

  • Columbia-laws to protect certain areas of biodiversity

Location of the Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest is located in South America and spands over 8 countries.

Facts and Statistics

  • 17 % of the Amazon forest has been lost in the last 50 years.

  • the Amazon Biome Spands 6.7 million km2 (twice the size of India)

  • It harbors 10% of the world´s known species

  • The Amazon is home to more than 30 million people

  • The Amazon contains 90-140 billion metric tons of carbon

  • home to at least 40,000 plant species, 427 mammals , 1,300 birds, 378 reptiles , more than 400 amphibians , around 3,000 freshwater fishes and 100,000 invertebrate species.

The Importance of the Amazon Rainforest

Why Biodiversity is Important

Biodiversity is very important because it boosts ecosystem productivity ,where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. The more diversity of species in an ecosystem ensures natural sustainability for all life forms.

Examples of Biodiversity

Biodiversity

The Amazon Rainforest has amazing biodiversity. It boasts the highest concentration of plants and animal species in the world. Around 10% of the worlds biodiversity is from the Amazon Rainforest.

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable.
