If a player rolls a double or a triple, it makes no difference with regard to how he may move. Each time a player rolls the dice, he must move his pieces the total number of points he has rolled,. If all such points cannot be used, the player must move none of his pieces, and must forgo his turn.
The game consists of three phases: first the pieces are placed on the board, then the players move the pieces through the board, and finally the pieces are removed from the board. In the first and second phases the players roll three dice: in the last phase only one. In the first two phases, players take turns rolling all three dice at once. They can use the points they roll with each of the dice separately or can combine them. Thus as a general rule, each time they roll the dice they can choose from a wide array of moves.
The most common game boards consisted of 3 X 12 boxes. These have been represented in any number of ways such as squares, circles, vertical lines, letters, leaves, crosses, monograms, or crescents. In the case of lettered game boards, the boxes ofter comprised six-letter words, which together spelled out a phrase. An example of this king of board was found in Timgad, in Northern Africa. In contains the following words:
Venari Lavari ("to hunt," "to bathe");
Ludere Ridere (" to play," "to laugh");
Occest Vivere ("this is life").
Duodecim Scripta was a board game popular in the Roman age. The words duodecim scripta means "Twelve Lines." Two players sat across from each other and placed their 15 black or white pieces (presumably stacked) on the first square on their side of the board. They then each tossed a set of three dice from a cup and would move their pieces according to the value of the throw.
