CHARACTERS (THE LIARS)

Gatwick Patil

17 year old, teeneage boy who loves to read. Gatwick arrived on the island with his friend Johnny when he was eight years old. Even if others aren't listening, he still loves to show his knowledge and views about the world. Johnny and Gatwick are best friends and Cadence also refers to them as "strong coffee and ambition."

SETTING

Candence Sinclair Eastman (narrator)

17 year old, teenage girl who suffers from migraines because of the accident. Candence does not remember a whole lot of her life before the accident. She wants to remember what happened to her but, she is not sure who and what to believe. Cadence has always had a crush on Gat, which later turns into a relationship. At the begging of the book, Cadence is a blonde, rich girl without a care in the world. At the end of the book, she is depressed and has to take prescription drugs.

Mirren Cinclair-

17 year old, teenage girl who is irritable and bossy. When Mirren is irritable and bossy, she always trys to be funny about it. Mirren is best described as "sugar, crusiosity, and rain."

Johnny Sinclair

17 year old, teenage boy, who loves to read. Johnny is one of Candences cousins. Johnny is best described as "bounce, effort, and snark."

The main setting of We Were Liars is Beechwood Island, which is located off the coast of Masacusetts. On the island, there are four mansions. Windermere, where the Eastmons, Cadence and Penny live. Cuddledown, where the Sheffields, Bess, Mirren, Taft, Liberty, and Bonnie live. Red Gate, where the Dennises, Johnny, Gat, Will, Ed, and Jamie live. And Clairmont, where the Sinclairs, Tipper and Harris live. A minor setting is Burlington, Vermont, where Cadences's family lives during the school year. The island also has tennis courts, beaches, and docks to make the Sinclairs summers more enjoyable.

Cadence Sinclairs life is pretty great. Her family owns a private island off the coast of Massachusetts. Summer fifiteen with the liars is promised to be a good one.

Rising Action

Something terrible happened during summer fifteen, but she can't seem to remember because of the accident. During summer sixteen she was not allowed to go to the island because she had to spend time with her dad in Europe. In summer seventeen, Cadence finnaly returns to the island.

A theme for We Were Liars would be "don't always expect your life to be perfect" or "not everything is as it seems." The Sinclair family was wealthy, but realized surely after they they were broken and dysfuntional. Cadence realizes not everything was as she thought after she returned to the island, also.

Resolution

The liars tell Cadence that its hard to stick around when they are ghost. The liars say goodbye to Cadence. Slowly, they walk back into the ocean to go wherever ghosts are suppose to go.

Climax

Gradually, Cadence remembers what happened that summer. Her family had got into an argument for who would get the largest house on the island after their grandparents passing. To end the fight the liars set the largest house on the island on fire.

Falling Action

Cadence confronts the liars about what had happened. The liars tell her she is correct. Not only did the liars set the house on fire, Cadence was the only one to espace the fire and survive it. The liars have been ghost the whole summer.

SUMMARY

While Candence Sinclair Eastmon vacations on her grandfather's private island, she struggles to remember the circumstances leading up to an injury she experienced two summers previous. Cadence spends many summers visiting her grandfather's private island in Massachusetts. Cadence has three of her cousins also on the island, Johnny Mirren and Gat, who is her aunt's nephew who she has ben in love with ever since she has been on the island. Cadence, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat refer to themselves as the liars. After spending one summer away in Europe with her father, Cadence comes back to Beechwood island to try to piece together how she hurt her head and lose her memory two years before, because of the injury. Slowly her memory begins to come back and she remembers how her mother and aunts had got into a bitterly argument over placement in their fathers will and who would inherit the largest house on the island. Cadence faces the truth of what happened that summer. Herself, Gat, and her cousins set Cuddledown, the biggest house on the island, on fire to end the anger between the family. What Cadence did not know is she on accident trapped Johnny, Mirren and Gat in the house, which resulted in the three of them burning to death. The three liars are ghosts, who have waited for Cadence to realize the matter of the tragedy. Once she realizes, she says goodbye to her liars and they slowly jump into the ocean and swim away.
