Active vs. Passive Audience

By AS Level Media Studies Student - Shiori Sherry Imai

More Details of Passive Audience

First of all ... What is an Audience ?

A passive audience is an audience that merely observes and event rather than actively responding it.

There's been a few studies done on what is called the 'audience effect'. Those studies seem to show that a passive audience works well for some performers that don't require a whole lot of skill.

An audience is a group of people that consume similar media in a certain way.

The method in which an audience 'constructed' or 'located' is always beneficial to a powerful group of people.

More Details of Active Audience

Active vs. Passive Audience

The active audience theory argues that media audiences do not just receive information passively but actively involved. It is often happened when they are making sense of the message within their personal and social contexts.

Decoding of a media message may therefore influenced by such things as family background, beliefs, values, culture, interests, education and experiences.

Media texts are 'consumed' by different audiences in different ways - an audience member can be Active or Passive.

Active - a passive model of consumption suggests that texts have an effect on the audience.

Passive - an active model instead suggests that audiences interact with the text to create meaning.
