How does the Sham 1 work?

Shams 1 uses rows of parabolic shaped mirrors (768).
1) The parabolic shaped mirrors concentrate sunlight onto a central tube where a special oil, called heat transfer fluid, is heated (393 degrees) .
2) The heat transfer Fluid circulates in the tubes until it reaches a heat exchanger. Here water is turned into steam.
3) This steam then passes through a gas powered heater that superheats the steam (540 degrees ).
Achievements of Masdar City
Masdar partnered with Total and Abengoa to deliver the 100-megawatt solar - thermal project by 2013.
The project took about 3 years to build and costed $600 million.
Covering an area of 2.5 km square, or 285 football fields, Shams 1 generates electricity to power 20,000 homes in the UAE. It’s results show Abu Dhabi’s great commitment to clean energy.

Achievements of the Sham 1 project
Masdar City contains several ongoing and furture projects and one of their most successful and effective project is the “Sham 1.”
On the 17th of March 2013, Masdar – Abu Dhabi’s renewable-energy company – together with its partners, Total and Abengoa, finally announced its successful project: ‘Shams 1’, one of the world’s largest Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants in operation.
Shams1 is a CSP plant that is the largest in the world right now installed with 100 megawatts capacity.
• 11 million man hours without any major accidents.
• 200 million gallons of water saved due to the use of air cooled condenser a critical advantage in the desert of Abu Dhabi.
• power generation for 200000 homes.
• Shams 1 contributes to the diversification of the UAE’s energy mix and reduces the country’s carbon footprint.

5) The steam is then used to drive a turbine that drives the generator to create electricity.
6) Once used, the steam is recycled back into the system.
The operating performance of these plants demonstrates a proven annual plant efficiency exceeding 14%.
4) The gas powered heater maximizes the plants efficiency by maintaining the steam at the optimal temperature for power generation even when there is cloud cover or low-solar radiation.
