Demographic Transition Model Of Japan

Problems and The Future

Japan's aging population is causing many problems so they need to change policies. They could change their immigration policies for example allowing more people into the county. They could also use pro-naitalist policies to encourage people to have more children.

Population and Change

Population Related Problems

Population Growth vs World.

Japan's population seems to have reached a point where it will not decrease or increase dramatically and in 2012 was at 127.3 million. In 2006 it reached it's highest point and stopped growing, it has been fluctuating ever since.

Japan is in the 5th stage of the demographic transition model, this means that it is hard to predict what will happen to the country next. The original demographic transition model only had 4 stages, as it was based on the UK. Japan seems to have progressed further than this so could be mapping the way for more developed countries.

Population Indicators

Birth Rate

Death Rate

This aging population has caused a higher death rate and has overtaken the world average. This is odd because Japan has the best healthcare system in the world. These new and unexpected circumstances show that the country is in the high fluctuating stage.

The birthrate in Japan has been declining in recent years because women are becoming more focused on work life and are less worried about having children. Contraception and Abortions are more widely accepted and available. This has caused a decreeing number of children as apposed to the older population.
