Birth Order

The Oldest Child

Adler theorized that birth order can shape our personality. Birth order position can influence our style of life and habitual way of dealing with situations.

Has birth order impacted your personality?

  • responsible, organized, goal-oriented
  • serious, aggressive, jealous, competitive, high self-esteem
  • fear of losing top/leader position

Birth order can shape us in ways we did not realize - our personality and behaviors.

Keep in mind, the psychological situation of each child is different. Birth order may not always influence personality development.

The Middle Child

  • sense of not belonging
  • lonely, lacks drive, looks for direction
  • natural mediators, avoid conflict

The Youngest Child

  • can lead to dependence, selfishness, irresponsibility
  • outgoing, endearing, delightful friend
  • manipulative and control-seeking if others are overbearing or bossy

The Only Child

  • characteristics of either firstborn or youngest
  • no rivals for parents' attention
  • pampered and spoiled
  • learn to depend on themselves
