I acquired my language from being with my family. My parents and family spoke to me from the day I was born, at first I listened to each of them, and eventually I answered. We spoke to each other everyday, at home, in the car, everywhere!

Acquisition versus Leaning Hypotheses - This is the way we learn language. It is the product of a subconsious process, he "acquired system" and the "learned system". Learning system is the product of formal instruction and learning is less important than "acquisition". This is the feeling out stage; what is a new situation?" It is like running and running a marathon. Most language is acquired, not learned.

Language Acquisition

Natural Order Hypothesis

When I was growing up an d learning language, my parents and family would correct me if misused my vocabulary. They would not yell but would tell the correct way to say what I meant to say, or they would repeat it back to me correctly. For example, if I said "Can I have a piece of candy?" my mother would have said "Yes, you may have a piece of candy." Also, with pronouns, my family would correct me if I used the incorrect pronoun. Eventually, it becomes natural to speak correctly and when you hear it incorrectly your brain immediately alerts you.

It is the natural processing of an acquired language. There are some grammatical structures that tend to be acquired early, while others come later in your developemt. It is like learning to walk before you run, following a recipe.

Monitor Hypothesis

Is the way we self correct the grammar of the language in our brain. It defines the influence of latter on the former, it explains the relationship between acquisition and learning. The learning system performs role of "monitor" or "editor" acting out to correct deviations from "normal" speech. It is knowing what failure looks like before you succeed. If you don't receive the results you want you try again. A student can only monitor their language once they know it.
