The question that lingers is why does someone or how does someone become a psychopath is it born into us or do we become one due to exposure to certain events, the way we are raised and different environments? Therefore, I am going to be investigating this question in reference to the nature vs nurture debate.
Psychopaths: Born or Raised?
The development and improvement of these skills will aid me once at university level, as the work that I will be doing will be mainly independent if not completely independent meaning that I will feel more confident doing my own research.
Having looked at a key area of Forensic Psychology; the criminal/psychopathic mind. I have gained an insight into what my course will be like and after having read the research and article published by universities themselves, I am able to determine the standards of work.
- I have developed a clearer understanding upon an untaught area.
- I have become better at researching and wider reading.
- My time management skills have improved due to having the pressures of meeting deadlines.
- My ability to filter any irrelevant information and only select key parts has also improved.
- Most importantly my independence has also improved.
All the research I retrieved and looked at was helpful as it provided me with further knowledge surrounding my topic and helped me come to a conclusion.
Research...
- Online Articles from Psychologists
- Documentaries surrounding the topic
- My A2 Psychology Textbook
In Conclusion
My Extended Project Qualification:
What is it?
- Investigating what is the cause of Psychopathy - The genetics or the environment.
- I am happy with the end product of my EPQ
- I can successfully research and discover information independently
- In order to do this, numerous case studies and examples providing evidence for either the genetic explanation or the environmental explanation will be included.
Why did I choose this title?
- I chose this topic as I am currently studying psychology and have gained a fascination surrounding human behaviour and the brain functions.
- I also am intending on studying Forensic Psychology at University, therefore having completed this will provide me with an insight into this area.
What is included within my EPQ...
- Twin studies providing evidence for Genetic explanations
- Research from Psychologists surrounding Serial Killers and their brain patterns
- The medias influence on adolescents - Modeling
- The influence of different settings
- Description of The Psychopath Gene
- I am going to be investigating my question in reference to the nature vs nurture debate.
- I will begin by looking at various research into the biological approach to psychopathy and combine this research to gain an overall perspective and see if the research is all consistent with its findings and can provide an explanation.
- I will also do this for research from the social and environmental approach of psychopathy and determine whether that research is consistent, which will then help to inform the debates of whether psychopaths are a product of nature or nurture.
Thank you for listening.
Are there any questions?
I have used a range of different sources to retrieve my information. Including:
What I have learned....
- There is in fact no solid answer to my question.
- Psychopathy is affected by both Genetics and the Environment.
However, it does lean more towards the Genetic explanations although an environmental trigger is required.
Strengths...
When doing this project, I found that I was good at understanding the research and interpreting it.
Time Management.
Writing skills.
Weaknesses/Challenges...
I came across a few issues whilst completing this which were:
- finding research for the environmental aspect was very difficult as there is a limited amount.
- It also proved difficult to not repeat myself.
