Consequences

Step 1: Nazis got rid of political opposition within Northeim

Step 2: People became more closed, less free with their thoughts as there were Gestapo informers

Step 3: The Nazis were in total control of Germany - negative discussion/planned opposition became impossible

Step 4: Jews withdrew from positions of power - Nazis were on their way to getting rid of the 'scum of the earth'

Step 5: Nazis began 'brainwashing' the Northeimers through propaganda --> they were close to creating the Volk

Step 6: Unemployment DID decrease, but the Germans lied about eliminating unemployment

PARTY MEMBERSHIP ROSE

Step 6

By tackling unemployment

Step 5

Propaganda

Northeimers had voted for Nazis because they promised to get rid of unemployment:

  • Nazis used money from central government to make work for the unemployment
  • Subsidized local builders to decorate flats
  • Book of Honor was started-named businesses which had taken on an unemployed worker

The intense round of Nazis meetings and marches continues throughout the spring and summer.

Hitler's birthdy became a celebration day. (April 20th)

On May 26 was a book-burning day.

In 6 months there were hundreds of events, all Nazis were forced to join and others were encouraged.

Local businesses also helped out promoting the Nazis' image.

Step 3

'Co-ordination'

Step 4

Persecuting Jews

Gleichschaltung - whenever even a small group of people got together, it would be under the watchful gaze of a Nazi.

Co-ordination destroyed the social life of Noethiem. By autumn 1933, everything way of entertainment was under Nazi watch - honest discussion of the Nazi regime or planned opposition became almost impossible

  • 1st of April-Boycott of all Jewish businesses (Nazis ran advertisements and coupons in newspapers with names of Jewish businesses)
  • Some Northeimers, especially Socialists still went out of their way to shop at Jewish-run shops
  • BUT, businesses (such as Dr. Ballin's medical practice) declined
  • Jews with places in power resigned to avoid Nazi hatred

Step 1

Taking over the council

The Nazis...

  • Framed Social Democrats and got them arrested
  • Nazis got rid of a Social Democrat councilor and put him in prison for "spreading reports of an anti-governmental nature"
  • Got rid of others through bullying + intimidation
  • 27th June 1935: Social Democrats had to resign as their party was banned

Anti-Nazis were dismissed from council employment

Step 2

Terror!

The Nazis wanted to control individual Northeimers. They did this through terror: they searched and ransacked houses (supposedly looking for ammunition and guns) and arrested twenty two people. Seven were taken to the local concentration camps.

Other Northeimers were arrested for minor offense (insulting the SA, 'spreading false rumors about the Nazis). People started warning each other what not to do as there were said to be 5 Gestapo informers in the town. Eventually some of the Northeim residence left Northeim for another town.

How did the Nazis take control of Northeim?
