I give this book four out of four stars.
Highly recommendable novel for people unfamiliar with Cormier's work.
One of the most interesting and enticing plot structures I have ever read.
Weaknesses
Strengths
"For a book of this length, the novel has a wealth of depth and complexity" (Beavers).
Two troubled teenagers longing for "tenderness" cross paths which ultimately leads to their downfalls.
"Neither villain nor cop suspects that Eric's undoing will come in the form of 15-year-old runaway Lori, who sees her own desire for affection mirrored in Eric's haunted eyes" (Zvirin).
Sometimes, drastic measures have to be taken in order to achieve something.
"Like Eric, she [Lori] is obsessed with a search for genuine affection and she's every bit as committed to pursuing it" (Zvirin).
"The lives of three troubled people become inextricably intertwined in this novel" (Beavers).
"Tenderness" occurs in places across New England, but primarily in Wickburg, Massachusetts.
