Interdependence of Body Systems

Circulatory, Respiratory, Digestive and Excretory

Digestive System

Circulatory System

consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines

breaks down food into small molecules that travel in blood for cellular respiration (energy)

(box out in green)

Consists of heart, blood vessels and blood

Human heart has four chambers, bottom two are called ventricles, responsible for pumping blood throughout body

(Box out in red)

Respiratory System

All body systems depend on each other! The digestive system provides broken down food molecules for cellular respiration to occur. The respiratory systems brings in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide -- also contributes to CR. The circulatory system allows the gases to travel in the blood and be exchanged in the body and the excretory system gets rid of extra water, salt and wastes. If there is a problem with one system, other systems will be affected. All must maintain homeostasis -- balance within the body.

Excretory System

Consists of the nose, trachea, lungs and diaphragm - muscle responsible for inhaling and exhaling.

Brings oxygen into the body (lungs) and lungs deliver it to the bloodstream so gas exchange can take place

(box out in blue)

consists of kidneys, bladder

gets rid of nitrogen, excess water and salt
