Systems
Unit 2 Lecture Notes
Colonists from Europe were sent to the Americas once the indigenous warriors were controlled.
A system called COLONIZATION began. Colonization is when people from one territory take over the people and land in another territory.
European countries like Spain, France, and England sent armies to conquer the indigenous warriors.
European armies usually won because they had better weapons, and spread diseases to the indigenous people.
Colonization - When people from one territory take over the people and land in another territory.
Some colonists took mates or forced themselves on indigenous people by rape. This changed the racial identity of people living in colonies.
Colonists captured and managed indigenous land. In many cases the native people were forced to farm or mine the Earth.
Colonists brought the language of their home countries in to the colonies and forced the indigenous people to learn them.
Colonists also introduced the religion of their home countries. The indigenous had to give up or hide the religions they believed in.
COLONIZATION AROUND
THE WORLD
EXPLOITING
USING POWER
In our last lesson we learned that Columbus' “discovery” led European countries to exploit indigenous people and their land.
Today we will learn how this exploitation was done.
Colonization did not only happen in the Americas. Indigenous people have been colonized around the world.
In Africa people were kidnapped and forced to colonize lands around the world. Africa was also colonized.
In Asia organized systems were used by Europeans to control and exploit the people and the land.
In the Pacific Islands colonies were established that were meant to connect countries from Europe with North America and Asia.
