Differential Association Theory

Skid row alcoholic

Differential Theory Association Defined

  • This theory proposes that through interaction with others, individuals learn the values, attitudes and motives for criminal behavior.
  • Theory focuses on how individuals could become criminals.

Theory explains that buying beer is okay because according to the law you have to be 21 and older but these skid row alcoholics are taking advantage of the donations they get from strangers which is wrong to societies eyes.

Embezzlement

Row Alcoholic

Skid

~Theft or misappropriation of funds placed in one's trust or belonging to one's employer.

~Federal offense

~In the criminal court system, the penalties for embezzlement usually include a jail sentence and a fine, both of which can be substantial.

Gang Warfare

The theft of a loaf of bread by a hungry person

~A gang is a group of idiots with identifiable leadership and internal organization, identifying with or claiming control over territory in a community, and engaging either individually or collectively in violent or other forms of illegal behavior.

~ Perfect example of Differential Association Theory

With this example, it can go different ways. Let me explain:

  • The person is a homeless person and does not have money what so ever.

However, if the person is really hungry but is financially unstable, with this theory it will defend him in the way that he did it once and eventually will steal more worthy things.
