Elie was loosing faith in a god because he didn't understand how a god could allow so much evil. They no longer feared death. They no longer felt any pity for anyone. They no longer felt anything.
Every time Elie felt it was all going to end it just kept getting worse.
He felt no pity for the dentist once he found out he was thrown into prison and would be hanged for taking advantage of the prisoners by taking their golden crowns.
Theme for Chapter 5
On the evening of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) the Jews in Buna gather for a prayer. Eliezer, who once lived for prayer and religious study, rebels against this. He feels that humans are, in a sense, greater than God, stronger than God, to still pray to a God who allows such horrors. "I was the accuser, God the accused… I stood amid the praying congregation, observing it like a stranger."
The theme in this part of chapter 5 is Elie's loss in faith and God.
1.At the beginning of chapter 4, the author mentions the head of the camp. What are some adjectives used to described him/ his appearance?
2. What was the dentist looking for inside the Elie’s mouth?
3. What “name “ was Elie known by?
4. What factory was bombed in Chapter 4?
5. Why did the author start to lose his faith at the beginning of chapter 5?
6. What happened during the selections?
7. What happened to Elie’s foot, and what had to be done to help it?
8. Why didn’t they want to sleep?
Theme of chapter 6
A lot of things happen in chapters 4-6. The prisoners went through medical checkups and got clean clothes and took showers. Another selection is made, and more people are taken away. Elie and his father both survive this second selection. Elie had to get his foot operated on, and had the chance to be resuced with his father, but didn't stay too scared by the thought of being killed. The Jews are moved to a different camp, and Elizer's dad is chosen to be killed, but is saved. Throughout these chapters, Elie's faith is lost.
Importance of remembering. As his father was choosen to go through the death line as evacuation began Elie ran after his father saving him. Before the evacuation Elie had thoughts of leaving his father to die. but once he saw he was really going to die he raced to him and safed him remembering what he only had left to as family, His father.
