The worship of ancestors and passiveness of women are what made the traditional family, in ancient China. Traditional chinese families were much larger than what they are today. Housing three to four generations, along with aunts and uncles. Religion and social custom are what enforced such family grouping. The task of maintaining a large unit of family was quite easy for the higher and middle classes but really difficult for low class families. Difficulties such as famine, sickness, and upkeep of the land made it nearly impossible to uphold the unity of the family. Once the family was broken there was very little chance they would be reunited.

Power was always in the old of the oldest generation, giving them power to inflict violence upon their juniors.

Respect for hierarchy was firmly established in the family.

The core of the moral imagination is the family. The parents give their children the gift of life and nurturing. The children should return the gift with affection and loyalty. The husband's job is very different from the wife but he should still respect the differences although they mutually support each other.

Morality

The chinese tradition is one of the richest sources of moral throughout human history. One of the

mainstream tradition include teaching of scholars, the teaching of the Dao and the teaching of Buddha. The Chinese moral tradition is based on a complicated balance between universal apirations and particular commitments. The Golden Rule: Do not impose upon others what you yourself do not desire.
