Steller Sea Lion

Threats

Babies are called pups

they weigh about 35-50lbs

and are about 3.3ft

Reproduction

Status: Threatened

threats: Pollution, bycatch, parasites & diseases, rookery disterbance by killer whales

Diet: Their changes in the fish species they eat, cause them to not get enough energy

Lower energy fish cause: lose condition, lower pregnancy rates, increase in disease and predation

females reach sexual maturity at ages 4-6 years.

Males can live up to 20 years

Females can live up to 30 years

Males reach sexual maturity at ages 6-8 years

they are most successful at ages 9-10 because they are bigger and can hold their territory

HOw can we help?

- do not shoot them because of competition for fishing

-stay out of their habitat while fishing so you don't take their food source

-also keep fish nets out of thier main territory

adult females are called females

The Turtle

an adult male is called a bull

Reproduction

  • After 80-90 days the eggs hatch in miniature adult appearance
  • Babies are called hatchlings
  • Males and Females are called: Males and Females
  • Babies size: quarter or 50 cent coin size
  • Adult: 6-7 inches
  • Dark brown head with 3-4 striking yellow stripes from snout to base of the neck

unsustainable hunting and illegal trade

  • on demand in markets in China

meat or "medicine"

  • Labeled: Critically Endangered

  • What can we do to help?

public awareness and help secure their habitat

They have not been documented in the wild for over 65 years

top shell (carapace) has approx. 50 bones in it

the female can lay for up to 4 years after one successful mating period
