No one knows what causes this disease to show up in people. But it is theorized that keratin, or skin protein, plugs the hair follicles and causes inflammation and infection.
Some past cases of dissecting cellulitis have been improved by removing hair follicles. In some cases, the disease eventually dissappeared, but that can take years; in addition permanent damage has already been done.
