Sarah and Angelina Grimke

By: Tori Krause

What lasting impact did

their reforms have on American society?

"I appeal to you, my friends, as mothers: are you willing to enslave your children?

You stare back with horror and indignation at such questions. But why, if slavery is not wrong to those upon whom it is imposed?"

"All history attests that man has subjected woman to his will, used her as a means to promote his selfish gratification, to minister to his sensual pleasures, to be instrumental in promoting his comfort; but never has he desired to elevate her to that rank she was created to fill. He has done all he could to debase and enslave her mind; and now he looks triumphantly on the ruin he has wrought, and say, the being he has thus deeply injured is his inferior."

What criticisms

of American society did

they have?

Sarah and Angelina encouraged people to join the fight (passively) for equality and freedom, two things that we have today.

Sarah and Angelina Grimke didn't like slavery or the lack of equality women were experiencing.

What success did they have in promoting reform?

To what extent were they

obsessed with achieving an

impractical goal through fanatical/

impractical means?

What details of their work

made them interesting historical figures?

What methods did they use to improve American life?

The Grimke sisters were successful in bringing more female support to the abolitionist cause and leading the way for women's rights activists. In doing so they inspired many people to join them in their journey for equality. But it turned out that many of their ideas and opinions were

just ahead of their time.

I don't think that the Grimke sisters were obsessed with achieving their goal. They might have been a little fanatical with all of the writing and speeches but I thought that their passive approach was very practical.

The Grimke family owned hundreds of slaves so it is strange that Sarah and Angelina became such strong abolitionists. They were also some of the first women's rights activists and female abolitionists.

Sarah and Angelina published many pamphlets and letters to get the attention and support of specific groups of people and toured churches in the northern states where

they spoke.
