Graphic Novels...

  • are much longer and tend to be more complex
  • are longer works that tell a single story from the beginning to the end
  • have their story lines wrapped up in only one or two books
  • got a reputation as being gritty, explicit, and for mature audiences
  • tell a story over many issues
  • are relatively short and tell the story of the book's heroes or heroines over a long period of time
  • there are usually many issues of a successful comic book, and the stories unfold over months and sometimes years
  • were regulated to more mainstream popularity, and have long carried their own stigma of being a childish, immature, guilty pleasure at best.

Types of comics/comic books

Like traditional novels there are endless ways to categorize different graphic novels. There are as many genres and sub-genres as in traditional fiction and non-fiction.

Comic strips: usually short, multipanel comics that appear in newspapers; typically in black and white.

ex) Garfield, or Snoopy in The Peanuts,

Comic books: thin periodicals usually published in color.

ex) the original Superman from 1938

Gag and editorial cartoons: usually a single panel, often incorporating a caption or speech balloon.

ex) political cartoons

Manga: the Japanese word for "comics"; is read from top to bottom and right to left

ex) Death Note

Superhero Story: superhero GNs have taken the popular form of comics and turned the once brief episodic adventures into epic sagas

ex) Batman: Dark Knight Returns

Personal Narrative (Perzines): are autobiographical stories written from the author's personal experiences, opinions, and observations.

ex) The Quitter

Non-Fiction: are similar to perzines, but the author is generally using their own experience to touch upon a greater social issue.

ex) Maus, Persepolis, Pedro and Me
