Oralism vs. Sign Communication

History of Oralism

History of Sign Language

Pros and Cons of the Oral Method

What is Oralism? The education of deaf students through lipreading, speech sounds and mouth movements. As well as opposing all forms of gestural communication

September 1880 - Milan Conference in Italy - Sign Language banned all over the world

Why?! To make sure that Deaf could function in the "hearing world"

Alexander Graham Bell - Educator of the Oral system, Eugenicist, creator of Mainstream Programs

What is Sign Language? A visual language expressed through shapes and movements of the hands as well as facial and body expressions

Charles L'Eppe - Established deaf and blind school in France

Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc - Brought sign language to America and established a school in Connecticut in 1817

In 1864 legislation passed and allowed Gallaudet University to issue college degrees.

  • If a deaf child is being raised by hearing parents they may feel excluded if they are the only ones that use ASL, and not part of the family if they can't speak
  • Maybe a deaf child/person doesn't want to be a part of deaf culture so they choose to speak
  • Maybe they lost their hearing at a later age and don't feel the need to learn ASL
  • Learning to speak may help them to feel a part of the "hearing world"
  • They can be part of both worlds if they choose to sign and talk

Pros and Cons of ASL

  • Sign Language is a great way for a child to express themselves before their motor skills develop
  • Sign Language is a great foundational language for a deaf child and will help them to have a better chance of learning more languages
  • Teaching a deaf person to speak may help them but it isn't necessary for their success
  • A deaf person will find great comfort in the deaf community with their use of ASL and develop Deaf Pride!
  • There aren't really any cons...
