Archive Material: The documentary uses some elements of archive material but mostly consists of reinactments of the events with actors to play each role. However, some of the archive material used are images of the actual murderers and murder victims through different stages in their life. The events are also shown through archive videos – recorded when the crimes were in motion.
The documentary uses a range of slow and fast pace editing techniques which create tension when appropriate. The long shots are mostly used before the murder event is explained to create tension while the fast pace editing comes in later when trying to knock down the killer. A and B roll editing is used which is presented when the narrative voice is talking about somebodies opinion (a psychologist or doctor) then the image on the screen would be a video of the person hard at work etc.
The documentary looks over several different themes such as murder, scientific analysis, psychological elements and serial killers. These themes are presented by the use of Mise-en-Scene which show elements of the brain and how they are different in a psychological serial killer. The documentary also uses rienactments of the murders with the use of actors – when speaking about a murderers childhood a boy would be doing the things that the actual murderer would have been said to do Eg. cutting off dolls heads.
The documentary shows a significant aspect of scientific information which is shown through brain scans, psychologist notes, computers and person experiments done. These are all included in the documentary to help the audience understand the rationale behind the idea of each murder and how much the brain is responsible for before the criminal is plain evil.
The documentary Most Evil uses linked music to narration which creates emotion for audience. The music is used to create tension as the documentary uses mostly suspicious/threatening sounds.
The Most Evil documentary uses a voice of god narration throughout. The narration shows a range of opinions of each event established.
