Maxwell

“Killer Kane! Killer Kane! Got a son who got no brain!” shout the kids who make fun of Max. Overgrown for his age, Max is a huge person, caring and obedient. Max, and Kevin, also known as, “Freak,” became the best of friends when Freak moved in into the neighborhood. Maxwell has his own father’s appearance, and his mother’s heart. He was amazingly obedient towards Freak, wherever they went, imagination stood by their side. Max, and Freak, were very imaginative, slaying dragons, and fools. Kevin, also known as, "Freak," was Max's best friend. Very little for his age, Freak was the smartest boy Maxwell knows. Ask him a hard word out of the dictionary, test his knowledge, and he’ll answer the question! Together, Max and Freak, went on many quests, and whatever lied ahead of them, Max would trust Freak to solve it. Freak was a very trustworthy boy. Yet, Freak is crippled up due to the disease he has. Later on in the end of the book, Freak dies. Freak notified Maxwell stories about how he’s a test subject in a Bionic Unit in the hospital, but, the real story is, Freak looked up his own disease in a medical dictionary, and finds out sooner or later, his heart is going to get to big for his body, and he’ll die, so he makes a lie, and, lives life to the fullest, having a happy ending for him being a best friend of Max, but, for Max, he took it hard. Before he died, Freak wanted Max to write down all the adventures, good, funny moments they had together. "Freak the Mighty!" Max and Freak were known as, nine feet tall, slaying dragons and fools!

Gram

Gram, Max's grandmother, was responsible for Max. Ever since her daughter, Max's mom, was murdered by Max's father. Gram and Grim took responsibilities for Max ever since. Putting a restraining order on Killer Kane, Gram was aware that he was on parole. Gram, being one of the two real family members Max had, took extra precaution with Killer Kane free. No matter what, she wouldn't let him lay a hand on him.

The Fair Gwen

Gwen, or referred to as, "The Fair Gwen," by Max and Freak, was Freak's mom. A beautiful women, Gwen looked like a model! Gwen had invited Max over for dinner when she felt bad about how she didn't have a proper introduction with Max. Scared, Gwen ran off with Freak when Freak was at Max's house, in the beginning of the book. Gwen took it very hard in the end, when Freak died. One month later when Freak passed away, she was in California, crazy for her boyfriend!

Killer Kane, Max's father, was locked up in prison for murdering Max's mom. Killer Kane is a big man, muscular, and big. He tries to wash away what people notified Max of, his dad being a killer. In the middle of the book, Killer Kane goes on parole from his sentence, and gets set free. His goal is to let Max know he was accused, being brainwashed all his life, Max knows the whole truth. His dad murdered his mother at age 4, he remembered exactly what he wore, as well. He nearly murders Loretta if it wasn't for Freak for coming to the rescue. The cops arrive, like a whole S.W.A.T team! They arrest him, and is charged for many offenses. Killer Kane, being a big, two-faced liar, lied to his own son.

Grim, Max's grandfather, also took responsibility with Max, with Gram. Grim was obviously old, but his old bones were crazy! When Killer Kane was set on parole, he was thinking about buying a gun, so nothing would happen to Max. With Gram not knowing in this plan, Grim felt broken, and sad lying to Gram. Grim snored loud, making it easier for Max to sneak out in the morning. Grim, throughout the whole book, took care of Max, and his wife, Gram.
