Chapter 1

Jane Eyre

*Jane begins to read "Bewick's History of Birds" while sitting on the window, hiding from her relatives.

"The cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, rain so penetrating"

Jane describes the

book and the pictures artistically. This shows the readers that she views the world in a creative and artistic way.

This quote displays that Jane enjoys reading and being told stories. She uses them as a way to escape from the mistreatment of her family.

"...and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John and Georgiana Reed."

"Me, she had dispensed

from joining the group;

saying, "She regretted to

be under the necessity of

keeping me at a distance;

"Each picture told a story; mysterious often to my undeveloped understanding and imperfect feelings, yet ever profoundly interesting: as interesting as the tales Bessie sometimes narrated on winter evenings, when she chanced to be in good humour;"

Chapter 1, Page 63)

"With Bewick on my knee, I was then happy;

happy at least in my way."

(Chapter 1, page 65, Broadviews Editions)

*Jane Eyre begins her story on a gray and dreary at Gateshead.

*She also mentions that she is not as healthy as her cousins

*She is separated from her cousins and the activities that they do. Her Aunt wants her to be distanced from her children.

Character Traits

The first chapter also highlights other differences between Jane Eyre and her family, and also displays other character traits.

*In the first two paragraphs, Jane establishes a lonely and miserable mood. She describes how as a child, she was purposely separated and alienated from her family.

*The reason why Jane decides to begin this way is to emphasize that she does not feel like a part of the family. Jane feels out of place and isolated, physically and emotionally, because of these differences.

The Readers learn from the

First Chapter that Jane Eyre isn't afraid to stand up for herself.

When John throws the book at her, she does not stay quiet. She accuses him of being a wicked and cruel boy, and also hits him back whenever he attempts to strike her again. Jane proves to be a strong willed and brave girl.

Jane narrates with a strong voice and understanding of her situation. This shows the readers that she is perceptive, and conscious of what is going on around her, even at a young age.

"Say, 'What do you want Master Reed;'" (John Reed to Jane Eyre)

John Reed, her abusive and heaveyset cousin, tells Jane that she does not belong in their family, and that she is here is becuase of a promise. This shows the readers that Jane

is thought of as "lowly" and "burdensome" to her family members, and that she does not connect with them.

""You have no business to take our books; you are a dependent, mama says; you have no money; your father left you none; you ought to beg, and not to live here with gentlemen's children like us, and eat the same meals we do, and wear clothes at our mama's expense."
