Causes

  • highly infectious disease caused by Group A Streptococcus (or Streptococcus pyogenes)
  • airborne - it can be spread throughout the air (coughing, sneezing, etc)

  • can also be spread by nasal or salvary secretions

  • most commonly in children ages 5 to 15

  • Impetigo

  • Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome
  • 30% of throat infections diagnosed in children between ages 5-15 are strep throat
  • 10% of adults diagnosed with a sore throat have strep throat
