The Outsiders: Chapter 6

Plot Significance

Setting

Thanks for watching!

This chapter is important to this book, because the "burning church" event forms the base of many important plot developments to come later on in the story. Also, this chapter is imbued with a lot of symbolic meaning which makes it a significant chapter.

Themes

Character Development

In this chapter, there are 3 main settings:

1. The car: They begin to travel back home in the car, when they see the Burning Church and turn around.

2. The Burning Church: After seeing the church burning, they travel back. Dally,Johnny and Ponyboy go inside the church to rescue the trapped children inside.

3. The hospital: After rescuing the children and getting injured, Dally, Johnny and Ponyboy are admitted to the hospitals for Burns.

1. Families can go through a lot of troubles, but they will always accept each other: This theme is clearly shown through Ponyboys acceptance of Darry even after they have had a rocky relationship for the past few years.

2. Another theme. is the way a persons deeds can affect how they are percieved. For example, the people around the church percieved Dally as hero for helping save the children, when in actuality, Dally isnt a hero, as shown through some of his past deeds in the book.

3. Courage is also an imminent theme in this chapter. It is evident where Johnny and Ponyboy rescue the children from the burning church

In this chapter, perhaps the most significant development is the reconciliation between Darry and Ponyboy. Ponyboy realizes that the reason Darry has been so harsh on him, is because Darry cares for him and wants him to become succesful.

Another development is Dally finally admitting how he cares for Johnny. Here, we see a very different Dally than is portrayed throughout the initial stages of the story.

"Johnny, I ain't mad at you, i just dont want you to get hurt"( pg 89, the outsiders)

The last important development in this chapter would be Ponyboy becoming a lot more courageous and strong minded after rescuing the children.

Up till now....

Plot Summary

What has happened up till now?

After Dally reaches the church, he tells Johnny and Ponyboy all that has happened. Ponyboy and Johnny, are on their way back home with Dally, until they look back and see the church is on fire. They hurry back to the church, and find out that two kids are trapped inside the burning church. Ponyboy and Johnny enter the burning church and save the kids with help from Dally, and are taken to a hospital for burns. There, Ponyboy meets the rest of the gang and reconciles with Darry.

Key Quotes

Symbolism

1.Johnny kills a soc in self defense

2. Johnny and Ponyboy run away with the help of Dally

3. Johnny and Ponyboy hide in a church

4. Dally reaches the church and informs them about what has happened while they were gone, a significant event would be that Cherry Valance is now a "spy" for the greasers

" I was scared. I still am" Johnny said with conviction

" 'Mrs O'Brian think you were sent straight from heaven Or are you just professional heroes or something?'

Sent from heaven? Had he gotten a good look at Dallas?

'No we're greasers' "

Gone with the Wind: the book "Gone with the Wind" burns down with the church. As the book is referred to as Ponyboys escape from the real world he lives in, the burning of the book symbolizes how his imaginary world and "escape" has burnt down. Also, the gun burns in the church as well. A gun generally symbolizes death/killing, and in this case a sort of sin. This symbolizes the burning of their bad deeds and their sins.

The little children trapped in the church symbolize innocence and youth, and saving the children symbolizes Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally "saving innocence"

"In that second what Soda and Dally and Two-Bit had been trying to tell me came through. Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me. When he yelled "Pony, where have you been all this time?" he meant "Pony, you’ve scared me to death. Please be careful, because I couldn’t stand it if anything happened to you."

Imagery

" I had taken the long way around, but i was finally home. To stay "

Narrative Voice

" The cinders and embers began falling on us, Stinging and Smarting like ants. Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze i remembered what it was like in a burning ember and i thought: Now i know, its a red hell"

The Narrative Voice for this chapter is Ponyboy Curtis. S.E Hinton has intentionally chosen Ponyboy as the narrator, because he is portrayed as more observant than some of the other characters. Also, he is less biased about the greasers/socs situation than any of the other greasers in this story.

This is a great example of Imagery, when Johnny, Ponyboy and Dally are stuck inside the burning church. You can picture being inside the burning church from Ponyboys view. The author also uses a Simile, and a metaphor comparing the situation to a "red hell"
