History
Years after La Marcus Adana Thompson created the first wooden roller coaster, the coaster was opened in 1884 and in Coney Island, New York. Wooden roller coasters started soon popping up everywhere in amusement parks and more. Around 1850, roller coasters had made the trip to America.

The purpose of the coaster's initial ascent is to build up a sort of reservoir of potential energy. Once you start you start cruising down the first hill, gravity takes over and all the built up potential energy turns into kinetic energy.
