In 1831 at a shipyard in Baltimore Frederick learns about the abolitionist movement. Two shipyard workers were questioning him about running away to the North. He played stupid because he knew they could capture him and bring him back to his master for a reward. When he heard about the abolitionist movement he didn't know the word but was determined to find out.
Frederick Douglass was born in 1818. He was born on a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland. He believes that he was born in February and later in life he made his birthday February 14. It is also rumored that his slave master was also his father.
In 1832 Master Anthony died and all of his slaves including Frederick had to go back to Talbot County. All Master Anthony's property had to be split between his children Lucretia and Andrew. This gave Frederick bad anxiety because he didn't want to go to Master Andrew's. According to Fredderick, Master Andrew was a bad man. Not only that but, as a slave Frederick had it kind of easy compared to others and he wouldn't be able to take whippings because his skin wasn't used to it. When everything was finalized he went with Lucretia.
In 1826 after moving to Baltimore Mrs. Auld teaches Frederick the alphabet. She wasn't accustomed to slaves and didn't understand that slaves aren't supposed to be able to read. When Hugh Auld found out he was furious and forced her to stop. This was the beginning for Frederick and his search for knowledge.
Around 1826 Frederick was selected to go to Baltimore to live with Hugh Auld. Frederick was only about eight at this time. He was sent here to watch after the Auld's son Thomas. Hugh Auld was related to Captain Anthony which is how Mr. Auld was loaned Frederick.
Master Covey was known as a slave breaker and Frederick was sent to him on January 1st 1833. Frederick's experience here was not a good one. He had a physical confrontation and surprisingly there were no repercussions. Frederick claimed this was his turning point as a slave.
In 1835 Frederick makes a plan with several other slaves in an attempt to escape. They were going to escape in a canoe down a river until they got up North. The plan failed because someone ratted them out. Everyone that was affiliated with the plan was taken and put in jail. Frederick stayed the longest in jail.
In 1836 after Frederick was sent to jail Master Thomas sent Frederick back to Baltimore to live with the Aulds. When he returns to live with them he gets work as a calker. Every job he has he is angered that Mr. Auld takes all the money he makes at his jobs.
On January 1, 1834 Frederick was sent to live with William Freeland from Master Covey's. This was his third master. Frederick describes Mr. Freeland as a southern gentleman, the complete opposite of Mr. Covey. Frederick was not content here, he wanted to be free more than anything, and it was really bothering him in this time period.
