Alfred Civillion Fones

was a dentist from Bridgeport and attended New York University College of Dentistry. He joined his father at Washington street Bridgeport and has been practicing dentistry for 5 years his main job was removing rotten decaying teeth.

Fones had an idea on how to keep teeth clean instead of just pulling them out. He trained his cousin and an assistant named Irene Newman.

Irene Newman used the skills that Alfred had taught him at there office which attracted people from all around the world. Because of dental hygiene there was a low death rate in Bridgeport during the time of influenza pandemic in 1918.

Alfred C. Fones was known as the father of Dental Hygiene

He created the first ever school for dental hygiene known as

Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport.

Newman the first licensed hygienist with the skills taught to her by MR. Fones.

Dental hygienists typically do the following:

  • Remove tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth.
  • polishing a patient's teeth during a routine checkup.
  • screening patients
  • reviewing a patient's oral health history and teaching appropriate brushing and flossing techniques.
