Theme

Character Analysis

  • Winston's role in this chapter is to provide hope for the reader about rebelling against the "Party".
  • Julia's role in this chapter is to help Winston rebel againist the "Party".
  • Winston and Julia develop the theme of "Love and Sexuality" by doing a sexual act and by talking about it.

Quote Analysis

"Not merely the love of one person, but the animal instinct, the simpler undifferentiated desire:that was the force that would tear the Party to pieces," (Orwell 126).

Exit Slip 8)

1.)

What do you think will happen next?

2.)

Can someone summarize this chapter?

3.) What do you predict will happen in chapter 3

This quote shows the absolute desire the two had for one another as well as their desire to rebel against the Party.

"She had clasped her arms around his neck, she was calling him darling, precious one, loved one," (Orwell 120).

This shows the newly found love that Julia has for Winston. She sees Winston as precious because most of the people in the society just follow their leaders blindly.

Quote Analysis

"Listen.The more men you've had,the more I love you.Do you understand," (Orwell 125).

This shows that amount of pure hatred that Winston shows toward the party and his love for Julia. Most men wouldn't be more excited the more people they're "lover" has been with, they'd be jealous. Yet, Winston takes pride in Julia being with more men because of hatred towards the party. It also shows the more men that Julia has been with, the more people are against the party.

Conflict Analysis

Man VS. Society

Character Analysis

  • The main character in book 2 chapter 2 is Winston Smith and the supporting character is Julia.
  • We learn that Winston is rebelling against the "Party" by performing a sexual act with Julia who is younger than Winston.
  • We learn that Julia is ignorant towards the "Party" and she tries to outwit the "Party" with the different things she knows about the "Party".

Love/Sexuality

The theme is love/sexuality for Winston and Julia meet together and as the chapter proceeds Winston starts to know Julia more and finds out she was not a spy as he suspected. Winston goes on a date with her and during this chapter Winston and Julia decide to have sex on there. They start there moment of pleasure in the bushes. Love starts to grow in Winston for Julia for she is willing to have sex and he loves her more for she has had sex a lot. "Listen. The more men you've had, the more i love you. Do you understand,"(Orwell 125). This qoute shows he loves that Julia has had sex with many people including party members. He knows that if she has had sex with party members he knows the partyy breaks the rules too.
