what is Existentialism?

existentialism is a belief system that includes basic beliefs such as....

the world has no purpose. no right or wrong.

humans are self alienated, as well as alienated from society as whole.

Existentialists believed that if god was a real thing, he/she/it does not care for the human race.

Karl Theodor Jaspers

  • Jasper's started out studying law for three semesters. He then changed gears and pursued a career in the medical field and received a M.D and a psychiatric degree.

He married a Jewish woman named Gertrud Mayer in 1910.

he published his first major work, General Psychopathology, in 1913. It highlighted information about mental illness that remains influential today.

Jaspers's Basic Beliefs

Jaspers was a Humanist, a belief system that focused on emphasizing the human race both individually and collectively in terms of positivity and the greater good.

"When language is used without true significance, it loses its purpose as a means of communication and becomes an end in itself."

Karl Jaspers’ role in existentialism is usually ignored, but he was important. He coined the term “Existenzphilosophie” — a of the term existentialism — and this alone makes his contribution unique.

General Psychopathology : highlighted mental illness.

Philosophy [of Karl Jaspers] : how to study existence without objectifying man.

The Question of German Guilt: a study of how the German people were led by Hitler and the Nazis.

Karl Jaspers...

  • lived through both world wars.

  • made enemies with the Nazi party because of his Jewish wife and lost his teaching job because of the Nazi's.
  • He was born February 23rd, 1883, and he died February 26th, 1969.

this means that people should speak because they have something to say, not because they feel as though they have to say something. Once pointless statements and conversations begin, real communication is lost.
