CARBOHYDRATES

Design a poster that explains the main food groups and their functions to the body

Carbohydrates- carbohydrates provide energy we need to keep us fit and active. Carbohydrates can be divided into two main groups.

Sugars- these are found in sweets, soft drinks or sugar containing foods (such as jam, honey, treacle and cakes). These only provide the body with a quick boost of energy and have no nutrient value at all.

Starches- these are found in bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. We can eat quite a lot of starchy food without becoming overweight.

Our diet should contain about 60% carbohydrates, mainly of the starchy food type.

Protein

Macro-Nutrients & Micro- Nutrients

There are five main groups of nutrients and these are:

Macro

 Proteins

 Carbohydrates

 Fats

Micro

 Minerals

 Vitamins

Macro- nutrients

Protein: protein is needed for the growth and repair of all the cells in the body. In childhood, proteins build the brain, muscles, skin, blood and other tissues. Even when we become adults we still need protein to repair and replace .

These are all animal proteins

Good sources of protein are meat, eggs, milk, fish and cheese. .

Protein is also found in plant foods such as bread, flour beans, peas and rice. Vegetarians get much of their protein from soya products, nuts, cereals and lentils, as well as those plant food.

FATS

Your poster should include images and show that you understand Macro and Micro

nutrients

Fats- fates are another source of energy for all our activities such as breathing, walking and talking.

Fats may come from animal or plant foods.

  • Those from animal are usually hard, such as lard, butter or suet.
  • Those from plants tend to be soft and reach us in the form of oils, although some oils may be hardened to make margarine.

There are two main types of fats: saturated and unsaturated.

  • Saturated fats are found in foods such as red meat, dripping, lard, dairy products (milk, butter and cheese) and chocolate.
  • Unsaturated fats are found in foods such as, oily fish, nuts, oils (sunflower and soya) and soft margarine. These fats do not raise cholesterol in our bodies so are better for us, in small amounts.
