Party Realingments

Major party realignments have happened during 2 major times in American history. These were during the election of 1860 and 1932.

A major change in policy brought about through the action of the stronger party

Four Elements of Party Realignment

Realignments

The disruption of the existing political order because of the emergence of one or more unusually powerful and divisive issues

1860

1932

Regional Realignments

An enduring change in the party coalitions, which works to the lasting advantage of the dominant party

The maps previous to 1960 show how the South was mostly Democratic and the rest of the country was mostly Republicans. This trend shifted and can be seen in later maps. The maps from 1980 to 2008 show that the South and middle part of America has stayed completely Republican while the west coast, east coast, and Midwest have slowly become predominately Democratic.

The election of 1860 illustrated party re-alignment. The divisive issue in this election was slavery and the southern secession crisis. Lincoln and the republicans won nearly all of the north, and became the president. After the civil war, Lincolns amazing leadership led to many increased voters for the republicans for many years after. Lincoln also brought about major change in policy with his reconstruction plans, and he changed the United States' policy on slavery.

The election of 1932 also illustrated party realignment. The republican Herbert Hoover, was president during the stock market crash. The divisive issue in this election was the great depression and the state of the American economy. Because many American's blamed Hoover and his party, Franklin Roosevelt was elected, and his economic and social reforms helped to ease the country out of the depression. After this the democrats became the country's main party. His election began a 36 year period of democratic presidents, only interrupted by Eisenhower's 2 terms.
