Consequences

The long term consequences of air pollution can cause eye irritation, asthma and bronchial complaints.

According to the nature of the pollutant, concentration levels and the period of exposure, the effects of pollution can range from a little irritation to acute sickness or even to premature death.

Ground level Ozones

Ozone contributes to such illnesses as bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma, and can scar lung tissue permanently. According to a report from the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, an international organization dedicated to reducing short-lived climate pollutants, tropospheric ozone is responsible for roughly 150 million premature deaths each year. It also affects global food security by reducing the ability of food to absorb carbon dioxide, which reduces yield.

History

Climate Pollutants

Mexico City’s air has gone from the world’s cleanest to the dirtiest in the span of a generation. Historic air pollution of the 1950s led to increases in infant death.

Greater efforts must be made to reduce Mexico City emissions. Countries must improve pollutant-monitoring systems, provide sufficient funding for emission-reduction programs, and create systems to evaluate progress.

Challenge to my class

We as people, should challenge our government to use more hydro electricity instead of coal burning factories. Hydro electricity would keep Mexico's air cleaner. Citizens should plant more trees. People could car pool to minimize pollution in the air too.

Issues

Mexico City's air pollution is so poor, birds literally fall out of the sky -- dead! Locals say living there is like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. In response, Mexico City has taken several steps to try to improve air quality by restricting driving one to two days a week. The program has had very little results.

Human activities such as cooking, heating and transportation also produce pollutants.

Causes

Smog causes continuous environmental problems in Mexico City.

By Chance Stocks

Sollutions

Having fewer motorists on the road on Saturdays led to close to zero impact. Proponents of the Saturday program had estimated vehicle emissions would be reduced by 15% or more.

About 75 percent of the air pollution is caused by toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide which is emitted by the vehicles. As Mexico is also located at a high altitude, the sunlight is stronger than that on the sea level, causing pollutants to react with each other producing a toxic gas called ozone.

The good news is, they have a relatively short lifespan in the atmosphere, ranging from a few days to a few decades. Reducing these emissions, in Mexico and wherever they’re found around the world, presents an immediate opportunity to achieve near-term mitigation of climate change while improving air quality and human health.

Close to Extreme

The city has spent several months in and out of Phase 1 of the Environmental Contingency Plan, whose most famous measure is the “Doble Hoy No Circula” program, which restricts vehicles from circulating two days a week, instead of the habitual one. If Phase 2 had been declared, the extreme measure would have divided vehicles by odd and even plates and declared that half of them could not be driven.
