Oak leaves are used by the United States Army as rank symbols. A gold leaf is used to signify the Lt. Commander or Major. Lt Colonel or Commander is identified by using a silver leaf.

The Oak tree is also used as the national tree of the U.S. it symbolizes strength since the oak is a strong and hard tree.

Deciduous Tree

Oak Trees will loose their leaves in the transition between fall and winter, therefore the Oak is considered a deciduous tree.

Varieties of Oak

Oak trees are available in more than 100 species. Some of them include chestnut oak, northern oak, white oak, and black oak.

Oak wood is a hard and durable wood. It has the ability to resist fungal and insect attack. Oak has many uses such as flooring, wall paneling, and furniture. This wood is reliable and has been used for centuries.

The Oak Tree is considered one of the biggest trees in the world. The trunk can reach a diameter of 9ft wide and 7ft tall. The branches have been know stretch out to 135 feet.

The Roots

The root system of a mature oak tree can total hundreds of miles and they can draw up over 50 gallons of water daily for the tree. The roots are very essential to the whole tree, they provide all of the tree's nutrients, and if a root were to be damaged it could result in the whole tree falling over.
