Common Creative Writing Terms

Genre- A genre is a group of artistic creation that are similar to one another. There are different types of genres such as in music, movies, and literature. Music genres include: pop, rap, rock, hip hop, etc. Movie genres include: horror, comedy, drama, thriller, suspense, etc. Literature genres include: young adult fiction, romance, mystery, non-fiction, biographies, etc.

George Romero is a great American-Canadian director, producer, and screenwriter. You might even recognize his name. He found his niche by making a name for himself in the movie industry with his amazing zombie outbreak in “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) and “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) among many others. He is definitely famous for his zombie movies and that was makes him unique in this industry because he has mastered a form that no one else has been able to touch.

Cliche-A cliche is a saying that is typically an overused stereotype that lacks original thought. For example: Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Creative Writing Trend

Self-publishing has become a huge trend when it comes to writers. Self-publishing will definitely affect the creative writing industry but it will be in a good way for the writers. It will make things easier for people to get their written works out there for the world to see. You can be your own boss, make your own deadlines, and be completely in control of how everything goes in the publishing stages. For instance, Brenna Aubrey self published a romance novel after turning down a six figure deal with a major publishing house. She broke out the budget and saw the downside to what the publishing world was offering her. It was definitely a risk because of how good the offer was by standards, but she saw the potential to make more on her own as well as the freedom of doing it for herself. Though good for some people I feel it could have an effect on the CWBFA graduates. Some of them could use self-publishing to their advantage which would be good. Some people getting into the publishing industry, like editors, can definitely see the downside. If you are going to be working in a publishing house and there is this surge in the self-publishing industry then they are going to be losing business.
