WORLD WAR ONE DISEASES

By Ty Seitz

Diseases were the main cause of death in WW1.

Such disease included influenza, typhoid fever, trench fever, trench foot, malaria and diabetes usually caused by exposure to wet and unsanitary conditions.

Trench Fever

Caused by bacteria which was transmitted by lice which were common in the trenches. It spread so quickly that about 1 million people were affected.

Trench foot

Trench foot is an infection that is caused when the foot is in cold and in wet conditions for a long period of time. This was happening in WW1 because soldiers were unable to remove their boots and socks to dry them out or air their feet. The foot becomes numb and then turns red or blue. If it was left untreated the foot could start to decay which would result in amputation of the foot.

solders would light a candle and hold it where the lice were thickest and it made them pop like popcorn
