Characters

In your opinion, is Andy's death a result of his individual identity or group identity?

Quotations

Climax

Conflict

Andy's death is a result of his group identity because people refused to help him because he was a Royal. If he was just Andy and not part of the gang Royals he would not have been stabbed because in this short story the culprit who stabbed Andy said "That's for you, Royal!" The couple was going to help Andy but then they saw his jacket that had Royals written on it.

The protagonist is Andy because he has a turning point in the story. At first, he wanted to known as a Royal but while he was slowly dying he realized he wanted to be known as Andy. The antagonist was being known as Royal and not as an individual because while Andy was dying he realized that the only reason he got stabbed was because he was a Royal and after that he tried his hardest to change that. The minor characters in this story are Freddie, Angela, the drunk man, the old lady, the cop, and Laura.

The type of conflict is man vs society. It is between Andy and the people who refused to help Andy because he was known for a Royal.

"We help him, and the Guardians'll be down our necks." This is an important part of the story because it shows that people are afraid of what will happen to them if they do something that they personally think is right but their peers don't. It is powerful because it shows peer pressure can cost lives. Another strong quote is "That's for you, Royal!" and this represents the story because a Guardian wanted Andy dead just because he was Royal and the Guardian probably didn't even know that the Royal was Andy. The Royals were known as a group and not as individuals.

The climax occurred after Freddie refused to help Andy. Andy was thinking if he was ever going to see Laura again. He realized that he was dying only because he was a Royal. He tried taking off the jacket even if it was the last thing he did because he wanted to be known as an individual. He managed to take off the jacket but ended up dying.

Conclusion

The point of view from which the story is told is third person limited. The narrator tells the story using he/she/it and only enter Andy's mind.

The cop represents society's point of view. Everyone that didn't know Andy just knew that he was a gang member and he got killed. The cop sees Andy as a Royal and that is what Andy is labeled as in the story. It connects to the theme of the story because the cop shows that Andy wasn't an individual but just another Royal.

The first major event that leads up to the climax is when Andy was stabbed by a Guardian unexpectedly. The next major event is when Andy was seeking help and a drunk man saw him but since he was drunk he could not tell that Andy was injured and so the man left without helping. The third major event of this story was when a couple (Freddie and Angela) came into the alley and heard Andy groaning but refused to help because he was a Royal. The last major event was when an old lady came to the alley and never heard Andy because she was partially deaf.

In the end, Laura found Andy in the alley and called the police. The police came and told Laura that Andy has died. The cop then wrote down in his notepad " A Royal" even after Laura told him that his name was Andy.
