  • Estimated times are given for each activity
  • All words, sounds, and sentences for activities are found in the Unit Resources at the end of each unit
  • Supplemental activities can be used at any time for at risk students

Activity: Drill Sounds

Level K-3

This activity practices sounds that have been taught.

Once letters-keywords-sounds have been introduced, they become part of the Drill Sounds Activity

Lessons start with a quick warm-up sound drill

Sound Articulation

Clip consonants: Do not add extra sounds t is /t/ not /tu/

Letter sounds:

b, c, d, g, h, j, k, p, t, w, y

Elongate vowels

  • Vowels are reviewed every day
  • When doing drill sounds, not all letters have to be drilled.
  • You may choose ones of need for students.

Activity:Dictation

Level K-2

Materials Needed: Echo the Owl, Large Writing Grid, Student Notebooks, Dry Erase Boards

  • Teacher will: Dictate sound to students
  • Students will: Echo sound
  • Teacher will: Say, "Write the letter that says the sound (/t/)", ask student, "What says the sound (/t/)?", and have students check work

**Only dictate sounds that have been taught

***All words for dictation are found in the Unit Resources at the end of each unit

*Dictate a sound/word, students repeat the sound/word and find corresponding letter tiles

*Dictate new sounds/words, review previous sounds, and target trouble sounds
