About the Foundation

What is the Foundation?

Established in 1984, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public School Foundation is the only independent, non-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing community support for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

•The Foundation provides a margin of excellence for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools beyond what is possible through local, state and federal appropriations or PTA activities.

•We fund promising, innovative educational practices; partner with the community to raise funds; and foster opportunities for feedback from teachers and parents.

•We are fundraisers and grant makers.

•Our goal is to spark a lifelong love of learning in all students.

Supporting Teachers

The Teachers' First Fund

Recent Grants Rashkis has received from the Foundation

The Teachers’ First Fund supports endowed teaching chairs, which honor exceptional educators. Chair honorees receive monetary awards of $1,000 annually and hold the chair for two to three years, depending on the specific chair.

Using Teachers' First funds, we launched an initiative to sponsor two SmartBoard champions at each elementary school. The champions receive extensive training and in turn, share their knowledge with their colleagues; teaching, trouble-shooting and creating model lessons. Each champion receives a $1000.00 stipend.

SmartBoard Champions at Rashkis include:

Jamison Cauthren

Joycelyn Bryant

Cristin Najera

•$2,500 to implement Legos into science and social studies curriculum to build higher order thinking skills and involve ESL students

•$1,200 for materials to set up a Parent Resource Center

•$600 for family literacy kits for ELL students

•$2,000 for Arts in Action

The Teachers’ First Breakfast

The Walk for Education

Kicking off “Teacher Appreciation Week” each spring, the Foundation hosts

The Teachers’ First Breakfast. Parents may purchase breakfast and/or roses to honor teachers and staff. Generously subsidized by The Chapel Hill Restaurant Group, all proceeds go into a Teachers’ First fund used to attract, support and retain excellent educators.

The Walk for Education was created by the Foundation in 1996, as a healthy, high-yield fundraiser for all schools in the district. 100% of profits are returned to each school to fund the project of their choice, such as purchasing equipment or technology, or to support programs, clubs, sports, the arts and more. The annual parade down Franklin Street to the Carnival at Lincoln Center is a highly visible display of school spirit and support for public education.
