Declan's Quote

"That’s when it happened again: Hassan’s face changed…I had the feeling I was looking at two faces, the one I knew, …and another second face, this one lurking just beneath the surface. I’d seen it happen before – it always shook me up a little…it just appeared, this other face, for a fraction of a moment, long enough to leave me with the unsettling feeling that maybe I’d seen it someplace before.” (Pg. 47)

This quote is showing the foreshadow, that Hassan and Amir are brothers. When Amir talks about he sees Hassan with weird facial expressions he sees Hassan with in a different way. He says "this other face" referring to him seeing Hassan as more than a Hazara, he saw him at one of his equivalents and as a brother and son to Baba.

Foreshadowing in The Kite Runner

I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975. I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek. That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years.(page 1)

“The next time I saw him smile unabashedly like that was twenty-six years later, in a faded Polaroid photograph” (67)

"There is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft... When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness." (pg 17)

This is foreshadowing the death of Hassan. Saying that the next time he saw him smile like that is in a picture gives the reader a hint as to what will happen. This is also foreshadowing the demise of their friendship, even if the friendship was one sided. Their friendship does end up fading, similar to the picture.

This quote is an example of foreshadowing. This sets up a feeling of sadness for Hassan. We know we will not see Hassan smile or otherwise emit happiness throughout the book. The quote foreshadows the death of Hassan. Not seeing Hassan's smile for twenty-six years later and even then in a polaroid pictures

This is an example of foreshadowing because it is a flashback before the story is even underway. It can be seen that we will re experience this scene later. This explains how the past will continue to come back on you especially when guilt is involved. Amir has done his brother a huge disservice that has effected both of their lives dramatically. Amir allows Hassan to get raped, which mentally ruins Hassan and changes his life. That leads to the extreme guilt of Amir and his quest for redemption. He should feel guilty, all he did was stand behind the wall in the alley way and watch his brother get raped as the quote says. When he could have helped him. This quote really lays the foundation for what is to come in the novel.

This shows foreshadowing because it shows that Amir may have something to do with theft in the story. Baba telling Amir there is only one sin it foreshadows Amir's theft of Hassan's life due to betrayal. Baba keeps asking Amir if he understands after this quote, implying that Baba really doesn't want Amir to commit sin. This can even lead to the idea that Baba may have committed crime himself. Baba talks about death as a theft sin more so than the others and this foreshadows the multiple deaths in the story.
