Tracking observations are a method that can begin at any point during a day and wherever a child is within their environment. it helps to collect evidence that identifies a child's current interests and the duration that different activities hold an individuals attention for.

An example of tracking also known as mapping is that a child could be playing in a specific area of there environment, a nursery. They could then spend a short while, around 10 minutes, playing with the kitchen area. After they have been there, they then could move on to the play dough table and spend a certain amount of time there. The observer would then have a floor plan of the environment and they can draw dash lines of where the child went to and for how long.

Using tracking sheets when observing children means, you cant interact with them so you are unable to write a detailed description of their movement. This means you can't pick up on their fine and gross motor skills. You are also unable to note anymore development milestones such as emotional development.

The tracking sheets won't always be specific and clear due to the fact of the children moving around to, too many places resulting in the sheet be unorganised and messy.

Advantages

This method of observation is good for observing children because this method is unsupported therefore children dont feel the pressure of having someone telling them what to do and asking lots of questions. They can just do what they like and act how they would normally act without specific instructions.
