Repressible Gene Expression

This ensures that tryptophan is only produced when it needs to be.

Why make it when you don't have to?

However, when tryptophan is provided by food, the tryptophan molecule binds on to the repressor. The repressor then binds to the operator and stops transcription of the gene. This stops the production of tryptophan within the cell.

What is tryptophan?

Tryptophan is a necessary amino acid. It is used to create serotonin, niacin, and auxin. It is usually produced, but when in an environment with tryptophan already in it, the gene expression can be turned off.
