South African Pass Laws

Pass laws were a tool for segregation in South Africa. The main purpose of the pass laws is that nonwhites carry them so whites can watch were they are going. One way the pass laws are used is when the nonwhite is entering a area for whites("Facts about pass laws:apartheid,.") .

Pass laws were first created for slave owners. The owners used the passes to watch were the slaves went. The carrying of passes by slaves started in 1709("Pass laws in South Africa.") .

The first people to be forced to carry passes who are not slaves are indigenous people. Like the slaves the passes are used by the owners or employers. The passes are used as permision slips to leave the work area("Pass laws in South Africa.") .

Pass laws were created by the white men in South Africa to control the Africans. The Native Act created more segregation in urban areas and told Africans where they can live. Laws were created to keep low wages and forced labor of Africans by white employers("Segregation") .

A resistance to pass laws from women is a large march in 1956. Over 20,000 were prepared to march to the Union building to hand in a petiton. The petition was a demand for the pass laws to end in South Africa("Pass laws in South Africa.") .
