The Green Party of Canada

Philosophy

My Views

I can say that I agree with a lot of what the Green Party stands for and the issues they want to pursue; I think they deserve to have more MPs elected into the House of Commons in order to represent the important ideas they have for Canada. I agree with the idea of Canada working together as a community, and how they want to create good jobs based on skills and knowledge, to encompass the abilities of Canadians and give us the opportunity to build our economy. It is also important that they are driven to help the environment, which is a major issue not only for Canada, but for the planet, and I have not heard of a lot of the other parties mentioning issues like this. Also, I support their idea to create a Council of Canadian Governments because I think it is important to contribute the views of all Canadians into our decision-making process, which would better ensure that all citizens get an opinion in how our country is governed.

Provincial Leader: Mike Schreiner

The Green party believes that Canada is a community of communities. They are founded upon the idea that the citizens of Canada and the government should work together and communicate to reach their long-term goals. Something they are focused on is a sustainable future, and consant evolving of the government and society. Elizabeth May is a environmentalist, so one of their priorities is to take action on climate change, but they are also committed to creating good jobs that are strengthened by skills and can embrace the advancements in technology. The Green party is clearly an advocate for building and strengthening our communities, and representing all Canadian citizens, by providing them with the necessities of strong economy, accessible health care, and much more.

Additionally, the Green Party has priorities for health care and supporting the people of Canada, making our communities more livable (eg. covering prescription medication, National Seniors Strategy,...). I think it is very important that they are trying to support the citizens of Canada and challenge inequality while striving to eliminate poverty by implementing a national Guaranteed Livable Income. Finally, an important issue to me personally that the Green Party addresses is building strong First Nations and Indigenous communities, by entitling

them to quality health care and services and respecting their

rights.

Mike Schreiner was elected the leader of the GPO (Green Party of Ontario)on November 14th, 2009. He is 44 years old, married to his wife Sandy, and a father of two, as well as a leading advocate for independent businesses, local food, and sustainable communities. He is well-known for his many leadership roles, including being a co-founder of the Local Food Plus organization, a non-profit that brings farmers and consumers together to promote financially, socially, and environmentally sustainable food systems.

To conclude, I would say that I would seriously consider voting for the Green Party when it is my opportunity to vote, because we share many of the same views and concerns for Canada, and I think they deserve more of a say in the House of Commons.

She is the mother of Cate May-Burton, and step-mom to Cate's half siblings, as well as grandmother seven grandchildren. She is a tireless representative for her constiuents and strives to build a more sustainable, fair economy.

2. A Sustainable Economy

The Green party is concerned with young families struggling with increased costs of housing, education, childcare, and household debt, as well as "dead money" that is stored in corporate bank accounts, not being re-invested or working at all.

https://www.greenparty.ca/en/platform#Sustainable-Economy

The Green party wants to build a sustainable economy that will benefit all Canadians long-term. They will do this by:

  • building upon sectors that benefit from the low Canadian dollar, such as manufacturing, tourism, and cultural industries
  • bringing back federal engagement in promoting and supporting tourism
  • embracing advancements in technology

https://www.greenparty.ca/en/platform#Sustainable-Economy

This will lead to a resolution to the biggest threat to Canadian economy in the future, which is the decline in Canadian productivity, because more innovation will come from manufacturing and clean technology.

3. Strong Communities

1. A Canada that works together

The Green party also shows concerns for Canada working together as community, promoting a government that will ivest in the necessities of our citizens, such as healthcare, publid transit, child care, and local agriculture. This is all part of increasing the affordability and livability of our towns and cities.

Their top priorities for stronger communities are:

  • defend public health care (bring all parties back to the table to bring back the Health Accord, cover prescripiton medication for all, and dental coverage for low-income youth, etc.)
  • implement a National Seniors Strategy (have a housing plan, Pharmacare, supports aging in place, safe public transport, etc.)
  • eliminate poverty and challenge equality (Guaranteed Livable Income, reduce income inequality, provide at-risk citizens with resources they need, reducing the burden on our emergency services, health care and criminal justice, etc.)

https://www.greenparty.ca/en/platform#Strong-Communities

The Green party has a vision for a strong, secure, and sustainable Canada, and wish to keep our citizens united through cooperation, hard work, and respect. Their economic plan is to invest in the people, and create good jobs that focus oon skills, knowledge, and sustainable resource development. This would lead to a strong foundation for Canada, creating investments in infrastructure, education, and health care. The Green party also wants to make our politicians more accountable, and our voting system more representative, as well as taking bold climate action. (By building on new solutions, and increasing the taxes for corporate polluters.)

4. Good Government

Another one of their goals is to create a Council of Canadian Governments by gathering federal, provincial, municipal, First Nations, Metis and Inuit leaders, which would allow them to develop national goals together to be implemented in each jurisidiciton.

The Green Party says the government needs to engage with and respond to the concerns af Canadian citizens, starting with ensuring the government is representative of the will of the people. They say they are the only party committed to ending whipped votes (they must vote the party line or face punishments).

https://www.greenparty.ca/en/platform#Introduction

Their top priorities are to:

  • elect MPs who are honest, hord-working representatives of their constituencies
  • restore Canadian public science and the role o evidence in our decision-making
  • create a council of Canadian Governments to reach solutions within Canada and work together with allies
  • defend Canada`s sovereignty

5. Bold Climate Action

According to the Green party, climate change is the biggest challenge Canada faces, but it is also a great opportunity. Their plan is to:

  • move towards virtual elimination of fossil fuels by mid-century

...with some shorter targets of:

  • reaching 40% below 2005 levels of fossil fuel use by 2025
  • reach 80% below 1990 levels by 2050

...therefore creating a strong, prosperous economy that will be sustainable in the future.

The Green party also wants to have more Green MPs elected in order to represent these goals because only Green MPs will defend:

  • our coastlines from increased tanker traffic
  • rivers/ponds from reckless pipelne projects
  • our economy frm further high risk extractive schemes

These are all issues that are threatening long-term prosperity in Canada, says the Green party.
