Poetry devices

In this scene I found many devices. Epiphany, simile, aliteration, pun, oxymoron, personification, repetition, and hyperbole where all found in this scene.

epiphany

"What is a man/ if his chief good and market of his time/Be but to sleep and feed?" (lines 31-34) Here Hamlet experiences a breakthrough and realizes that he has a purpose.

simile

In Act 4, Scene 4 there are two examples of simile. "examples gross as earth exhorts me" (line 49). "graves like bed"(line 65).

Summary

In this scene, Hamlet is on his way to England. Along the way he sees Fortinbras leading his troops into Denmark towards Poland. He finds out the Norwegians are waging war on Poland over a worthless piece of land. Hamlet directs Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to go ahead. In his soliloquy he is very bitter and compares himself to Fortinbras.

Aliteration

Summary continued

Hyperbole

(line 63) "twenty thousand men"

repetition

(lines 37 and 42) "beast"

Personification

Oxymoron

"whose spirit with devine ambition puffed" (line 52)

"dull revenge" (line 35)

pun

"death, and danger dare" (line 55)

While Fortinbras was going to die for a chance at honor, Hamlet had failed to seek revenge against Claudius. Hamlet promised that from that day forward he would devote his life to revenge.

"My thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth" (line 69)

Hamlet (act 4 scene 4)
